As much as I enjoy trying different products and promoting cruelty-free cosmetics, crafting is something that makes my heart soar. I absolutely love it and have since I was knee high to a grasshopper (high five if you know where that reference comes from). As my interest in eco-living has grown, I’ve realised that crafting and DIY projects can help to minimise waste and promote a more sustainable lifestyle (financially and environmentally). One of the items that I used to go through like hot dinner was earphones! They were an absolute nightmare for me, and as a result of tangling at the bottom of many a handbag, they’d inevitably end up broken and destroyed. Unfortunately, this meant that from my handbag, they went straight to the landfill. Not a positive way to live – or cheap.
So here’s a little, extremely simple DIY project that can save you money and protect all your wiring products (earphones, chargers etc!). It can also be used to make bracelets AND it’s extremely therapeutic. So make a hot chocolate, put on a film and relax while you craft!
All that you’ll need is:
- The earphones / cables / whatever you want to protect
- Embroidery thread / wool
Step One:
Knot your thread onto the wire. You can tuck in the string end, so don’t worry about that! If you’re wrapping headphones, I recommend starting on the thickest part of the cable as it’s easier than the thinner sections.
Step Two:
Make a loop over the top of the cable. Effectively, you want it to look like a big C.
Step Three:
Now, bring the thread underneath the cable and through the loop so that it makes a knot. Pull it tight!
Step Four:
Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat… After a while, you will notice that the knots form into a pattern and spiral their way down the cable! You can easily change colours, use two threads at once to create thicker bands, whatever takes your fancy and most importantly – say goodbye to lost and tangled headphones! They won’t get into knots anymore and they’re a lot easier to find at the bottom of the pit that forms within our bags! So simple and cheap, but effective!

What a neat idea! I used to do this technique with my HAIR for hair wraps (remember when that was all the rage?!) I even had a bead at the end of the hair wrap. I got my school picture taken with it in my hair and my mom made me re-take the school picture LOL. I like the headphone cords that are flattened, they seem to not break as easily, but this is such a cool DIY. Thanks for sharing this – I agree, it’s very therapeutic. 🙂

Yes! Exactly!! I never did it in my hair, but I remember when kids would come back from holidays they’d always have them done. I love looking back at the photos of trends that came and went. We didn’t get photos each year in school, just when we first went (age 4) for our Communion (age 7) and then Confirmation (age 11). In highschool they did two yearbooks randomly, but both were in our uniforms and nothing special.

Omg, I’ve found ipod earbuds to be the worst! Mine always separate at the earpiece, so the cables inside are exposed. Not very safe at all! The earphones I wrapped came free with my phone and so far *knock wood* they’re perfect. I definitely find wrapping them preserves them and stops them getting into knotted messes!!
