This post may be quite a long one, and will undoubtedly by updated over time. Often when we are trying to find cruelty-free products, it’s easier to start by finding out who does test and going from there. The cosmetics companies indicated below fall into the following categories:
- They test on animals.
- They hire third parties to test on animals.
- They are owned by parents companies who use animal-testing. *
- They sell in China and thus, automatically participate in animal-testing as per Chinese law.
I hope that this is helpful. If you know others, of course feel free to comment below and I’ll add them. As I say, this will be a growing post, so it is not complete and should not be used as a “if they’re not listed, they’re cruelty-free” guide. Rather, if they are listed, I would strongly urge you not to buy their products.
You do not need to support animal-testing to wear cosmetics. There is NO excuse.

So what are good companies that don’t test on animals?

I am building a list of Cruelty-Free brands on here (in my tab, you should see it – but it’s incomplete so far). I know it can seem daunting to see a massive list of companies that test, but it IS possible to find amazing products from CF companies. I love TheBalm, which is comparable to Benefit (but far exceeds them in my opinion). There are also drugstore brands like ELF, Physicians Formula, Essence, LUSH, Ecotools, Soap&Glory and Wet n Wild. Any brand that I review on here will be CF, so hopefully you’ll check back! 🙂 Xx

No problem at all! I know exactly what you mean when you see the listed companies.. that’s how I was and I know it can seem daunting to think “well, what can I use?!” especially if you see images of what the testing involves (I specifically don’t post them because they are horrific). A few on here I did wonder about. So tough to shop for things sometimes. Either it’s loaded with chemicals or they are not cruelty-free:(

I know.. It can be difficult at first. But trust me, when you get into the swing of it, it gets a lot easier. The trick is even finding one CF company that you love and slowly replacing your tested cosmetics with them. TheBalm is a great one (kind of comparable to Benefit, but I think it’s better all-round). Wet & Wild is a good drugstore option. W7 cosmetics are another drugstore company that do dupes for high-end products, like the Urban Decay naked palettes. As for the chemicals, I only purchase paraben-free cosmetics and I’m vigilant about other chemicals. I’m hoping to start some posts about making your own soaps, lotions etc with 100% natural (and inexpensive) ingredients. I have the ingredients ready to go so as soon as I’ve tried and tested the recipe, it’ll be up! Xx

Of course! Something very important is that essential oils are wonderful for many reasons, but can be quite irritating for those with sensitive skin:( Not always, but something to be weary of.

Also, Kose (a Japanese company that does test on animals) bought a 93.5% share in Tarte, so while they themselves are cruelty-free, their parent company isn’t.

Oh my i have a couple of rimmel foundation as its hard to find a colour for my skin in other makeup brands. Im relieved elf is a safe brand to use and i hears that w7 brand of make up is animal crulity free so ive been getting that brand and i love them! Thanks for sharing. I might not use rimmel now (so sad 😕😣😢)

I’m so glad you found this post useful!! I’ll be updating it as much as possible. It’s such a shame about Rimmel – and so unnecessary for them to be testing on animals in this day and age! But there are definitely good alternatives. If you’re looking for something more expensive, TheBalm are excellent, but Catrice Cosmetics have a huge range of foundations that have gotten really good reviews from what I’ve read (I’m waiting to test one when I run out of my current one!) Xx

You say Benefit test on animals but their website says they don’t.? Who do I believe? Inam looking for a reasonably priced cosmetic advent calendar , but one from a company that does not test on animals. Any thoughts on that please?

As Benefit is sold in mainland China where animal testing is mandatory by law, they are not considered a cruelty-free brand, unfortunately. A great comparable, but cruelty free company is TheBalm.
